What is a Smog Check?
Smog Checks are deisgned to measure the amount and type of pollutants your vehicle is emitted. A Smog Check may include any of the following tests:
- Visual inspection of emission control components and systems
- Functional inspection of the vehicle's check engine light, ignition timing, exhaust gas recirculation system, fuel evaporative system, and gas cap
- Functional inspection of the vehicle's On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) system
- Tailpipe emissions inspection
Three types of Smog Checks
- Star Certified
- Test Only
- Test & Repair
STAR stations are Smog Check stations that meet higher performance standards established by the Bureau of Automotive Repair. Some STAR stations are licensed to perform only tests, while others are licensed to perform both tests and repairs.
A Test Only facility is only able to test your vehicle and provide a pass or fail outcome. If your vehicle fails, you will need to repair or bring it into compliance before retesting.
Test & Repair
A Test and Repair shop is not only able to test your vehicle, but is also authorized to perform repairs to bring it into compliance if it fails the initial test.
